📖About this data

The converter below uses reference exchange rates that are refreshed on a daily schedule. It is designed for quick estimates rather than exact settlement.

What is a reference exchange rate?

A mid-market or reference rate sits roughly halfway between the buy and sell prices that banks quote each other. It is the fairest single number to describe what a currency is worth at a point in time, and it is what most public rate tables display.

Why your bank gives a different number

Retail and commercial banks add a margin on top of the mid-market rate, and card networks add their own spread and fees. That is why the rate you receive in practice is usually a little worse than the reference rate shown here.

How to read a currency pair

In a pair such as USD/CNY, the first currency is the base and the second is the quote. The number tells you how much of the quote currency one unit of the base currency buys. If the number rises, the base currency has strengthened against the quote currency.

What moves exchange rates

Interest rate differentials between countries, inflation outlook, trade balances, capital flows, political stability and central bank policy all influence rates. Currency markets are open around the clock on weekdays but close at weekends, which is why rates appear frozen from Friday evening to Sunday.

❓Frequently asked questions

How current are these rates?

Rates are refreshed on a daily schedule. They are suitable for budgeting and comparison, but not for executing a transfer.

Is this the rate my bank will give me?

No. Banks and money transfer services apply a margin and fees on top of the reference rate. Expect the practical rate to differ.

Can I use this for accounting or settlement?

No. Use the official rate published by your bank, payment provider or tax authority for any financial record.
